Five Must See Boys High School Basketball Games in January

PG County Boys High School Basketball

Prince George’s County has been designated a Hoops Hotbed by ESPN. The 2011-2012 Boys High School Basketball season is heating up. We believe these are five must see January games involving Prince George’s County teams.

  • January 20th  7:15 p.m. – - Douglas (2A) travels to Largo (3A) in a must win game for the Eagles. Largo still has County and Maryland 3A State Title goals so they need to win to keep pace with Gwynn Park (2A) for a chance at the County Title.
  • January 21st    7:30 p.m. – - DeMatha at Gonzaga on Saturday January 21st at 7:30 p.m.- – features two of the areas best teams and is the only game on this list that does not involve two Prince George’s County teams.
  • January 24th   7:15 p.m. - – Duval is proving that they belong in the Prince George’s 4A League title race. A victory against the Suitland will help solidify their status as a contender.
  • January 27th  7:30 p.m. – - Riverdale Baptist has national aspirations and travels to National Christian in game that will be one tough road test.
  • January 31st   7:15 p.m.  — The last game featured game of the January involves Bowie and High Point two teams that are trying to position themselves to go deep in the Maryland State 4A playoffs. Bowie is the road team in this game but victory will help position them to be a first round playoff host.

Prince George’s County 2011-2012 Boys High School Basketball Update

The surprising, not so surprising team for the 2011-2012 4A Boy’s Basketball season is DuVal. Improvement was expected when they returned 4 starters, but this year’s team has already eclipsed last year’s win total. The Tigers have eclipsed last years win total in just 8 games. They have a 6-2 record, including a win over perennial Prince George’s County 4A League leader Eleanor Roosevelt. The Raiders are off to a 6-2 start as well. Flowers and Bowie are both 4-1 in league play, but the Bowie Bulldogs may be benefiting from a weaker schedule. Suitland is about where they were expected to be 5-2 overall. Expect the Rams to have no problem reaching the playoffs. Oxon Hill is a team that is hard to figure out — they have wins against Flowers and Suitland but lost to 2A Crossland. They could contend with Wise for Maryland 4A playoff spot or drop out of contention early. High Point’s league record 2-3 does not reflect that of a playoff contender but it is much too soon to rule them out. The Eagles losses against, Eleanor Roosevelt, Suitland and Bowie should not cause alarm. Their two games against DuVal later in the season will help define both teams.

In Prince George’s County 3A/2A/1A league favorite Gwynn Park is off to a 4-4 start. While a .500 record is not up to Yellow Jacket standards, they still should be regarded as the team to beat since 3 of their losses are out league and against bigger schools. Their only league loss came against Potomac, who is off to a 6-3 start with a win over 4A Blandensburg. Largo and Friendly lead the Prince George’s County 3A/2A/1A League with 5-0 records in league play. Surrattsville which was a preseason 1A playoff favorite finds itself in a deep hole with a 0-5 start in league play. Another playoff contender Douglas is 2-3 and will have to do well against Gwynn Park and Friendly if they want to make the Maryland 2A playoffs. Forestville and Fairmont Heights should contend for Maryland 1/A playoff bids.

Among the private schools, DeMatha is off to another strong start at 10-0. All of the Stag’s wins have been double digit wins. Bishop McNamara is just under .500 6-7 with hopes of a strong finish to the season. St Vincent Pallotti is doing very well at 11-5. Riverdale Baptist as expected is also having a fine season at 14-2. Flowers vs Suitland High School Football

Aggressive Play calling Helps C.H. Flowers beat Suitland

Suitland 10-1 was the obvious favorite in the game but Flowers was not concerned having played the Rams close earlier in the year.  The Jaguars coaching staff was aggressive in their play selection from the start.  Flowers defensive linemen’s athleticism was on display throughout the game.  Suitland was the more confident team in the first half and seemed to be ready to score several times but didn’t.  Suitland’s botched  field goal at the end of the half gave Flowers confidence going into the second half.

Suitland did score first in the second half but was unable to pull away. When Flowers scored the game changed dramatically.  The Jaguars followed their touchdown up with an onside kick which they recovered.  Once they had the ball Flowers did not hesitate to go for it on fourth down.  Their gamble paid off with a second touchdown.  From that point they tried their best to run out the clock against the Rams.  Suitland did manage to get the ball back with a chance to tie the game but once again the Jaguars came through this time with a key interception.  C.H Flowers will play Quince Orchard on Friday November 25, 2011.

In other playoff action Douglas beat  Glenelg to capture the Maryland 2A Championship. The Eagles face Kent Island in the 2A semi finals C.H Flowers will play Quince Orchard on Friday November 25, 2011.   Douglas may be a slight favorite in this game.  Surrattsville did not fare as well in the Maryland 1A South Championship game.  Defending State Champion Dunbar of Baltimore prevailed. Let’s root these Prince George’s County Football teams to victory.

2011 Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association (MPSSAA) Playoffs

When the 2011 Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association (MPSSAA) Playoffs began there were 8 County teams involved. Potomac  was only Prince George’s County High School to host a game featuring an opponent from outside the County.   Westlake was Fourth in the Southern Maryland Athletic Conference (SMAC) but it still managed several impressive victories including one in the I-95 Classic

Potomac started the year 0-2. The team went undefeated afterwards winning 8 straight to earn the number 2 seed in the Maryland 3A South Region.  This was an all Wolverine affair as the Potomac Wolverines faced the Westlake Wolverines. Westlake’s running game proved too much for Potomac who kept the score close at 14-6.  A second half interception by Westlake proved to be the turning point in the game.  Westlake will now face number Maryland 3A South Region number 1 seed Huntingtown on Friday November 18, 2011 at 7:00 p.m.

In Maryland 4A play it was a day of upsets CH Flowers beat Eleanor Roosevelt 13 to 8.  This game was a defensive struggle.  Suitland prevailed over last years 4A South Region Champ, Wise. Wise had been looking for its first state Title now Suitland will be seeking its third State Football Title.  Suitland will host Flowers on Saturday, November 19, 2011 at 1:00 p.m.

The most impressive win by a Prince George’s County School may have been  Frederick Douglas  over Patuxent.  Patuxent’s was ranked 1 in Maryland 2A South Football and its only loss had come against Huntingtown.  Douglas proved why its a perennial State title contender with a 26-20 victory. Douglas will face Maryland 2A South Region number 2 seed Glenelg on Friday November 18, 2011 at 7:00 p.m.

Surrattsville defeated W.E.B. Dubois 24 to 13 in Maryland Class 1A action.  Surrattsville continues its late season run against Dunbar of Baltimore on Saturday, November 19, 2011 at 1:00 p.m.  Gwynn Park who finished  regular season with an impressive victory over Surrattsville came up short 17-14 vs. Glenelg in Maryland Class 2A playoffs.  Let’s wish the remaining 4 teams well in the regional championships.

Gwynn Park vs Surrattsville High School Football

The rivalry football game between the Gywnn Park Yellow Jackets and the Surrattsville Hornets had extra meaning this year with both teams fighting for a playoff spots. Gwynn Park is a perennial football power but they knew not to take anything for granted. They were aware that the playoffs essentially began a week early for them. A loss to rival Surrattsville meant no chance at the State Playoffs. The Jackets were well prepared for the game and fought to keep their focus when emotions ran high. Gwynn Park’s mental miscues kept the game close in the beginning but the coaches settled the Jackets down. Once they got in to the flow of the game the Jackets became methodical and wore down the Hornet’s defense. Gwynn Park had a balanced running attack with three rushers going over 80 yards. Gwynn Park also passed for two touchdowns as they built an insurmountable lead against the Hornet in order to secure a spot in the Maryland 2A State Playoffs.

Surrattsville persisted until the end mounting a couple of late drives and eventually earned a score on a pass to an open receiver in the end zone. The lost kept the Hornets from a having a winning record in 2011. Fortunately, for Surrattsville their season was not ruined with a loss to a fierce rival. Losses by other teams allowed them to get into the playoffs. They will be in the Maryland 1A State Playoffs this weekend.

Prince George’s County will have 8 playoff football teams in 2011. Roosevelt (4A), Suitland (4A), Wise (4A), Flowers(4A), Potomac,(3A) and Douglas (2A) also qualified for the Maryland State Playoffs.
