And Then There Were Three

The Maryland High State Basket Title was the dream that so many teams pursued this season. From February 24th through March 3rd, the field was winnowed down until just 4 boys and 4 girls teams remained in each classification from 1A to 4A.

Prince George’s County has three teams in this semi-final round. Each of these teams is hoping to take home a trophy. In order to get to the Semi finals, Dr Henry Wise’s Girl’s basketball team, beat a very good team from C. H. Flowers team (4A). Largo’ s Boy’s (2A) team prevented Frederick Douglas (2A) from have a Cinderella team in both football and basketball. In a classic nail biter, Eleanor Roosevelt (4A) edged Suitland (4A).

Prince George’s County Boys and Girls High School Basketball Teams in the 2011-2012 Maryland State Playoffs

Gwynn Park High School Boys Basketball
Once again Prince George’s County has numerous teams with genuine chances to capture State Titles.  On the Boys Side Gwynn Park (2A), Largo (2A),  Charles Herbert Flowers (4A) and Eleanor Roosevelt (4A) have the best shots at winning titles.  Forestville (1A) and Friendly (3A) are contenders but face long odds.  Amongst the Girls Surrattsville (1A), Friendly (3A), and Henry Wise (4A) may have the best chances at State Titles. Gwynn Park won the 1A/2A/3A League Title but as a 3 seed in the 2A South it will have to get past defending State Champ Calvert. Calvert’s only loss came against 4A East number 1 seed North Point. Prior to that loss they had won 37 straight games.

Once again Forestville, Surrattsville and Fairmont heights all made the playoffs but this time Forestville hosts Fairmont Heights in a round one game. Surrattsville earned a number 2 seed and will most likely face the Dunbar Girls in the Regional Finals. This is a game that the Hornets can win they have come a long way since their opening game loss to Gwynn Park.

MPSSA 1A Girl’s Bracket

Maryland 2A Girls
This bracket is so tough that the Gwynn Park Girls who won the 1A/2A/3A League Title could only earn a number 3 seed. Largo Douglas and Central also made the playoffs. Largo as the number 5 eying an upset of number 1 Glenelg. Gwynn Park (3) vs Calvert (2) maybe one of the best match ups outside of the State Finals.

MPSSA 1A Girl’s Bracket

Maryland 3A Girls
Friendly is clearly the team to beat in the 3A South Regional. Largo and Crossland are in this region too but they face competition that is just too steep. Friendly will certainly face stiff SMAC competition most likely from outside of Charles County. Huntingtown (Calvert) and Chopticon (St Mary’s) will all seek to knock off the Patriots.

MPSSA 3A Girl’s Bracket

Maryland 4A Girls
All of the Teams in the 4A South Region are Prince George’s County Teams. Wise is clearly the team to beat this year but Flowers has excellent team too. Bowie and Suitland have very solid teams this year. If there is a surprise team look for it to be Eleanor Roosevelt. Still it looks to be the Pumas Year and they may get a chance to avenge last year’s Maryland State Finals loss against Gaithersburg

2011-2012 Prince George’s County Boys High School Playoff Outlook

Prince George's County Boys HS Basketball
Maryland 1A Boys
Forestville, Surrattsville and Fairmont heights all made the playoffs and will all host a playoff game. Forestville Knights received a number 4 seed and first round bye. They will most likely play Surrattsville in the second round and then face Dunbar of Baltimore in the third round. Defending State Champion Dunbar is going to be too much for the Knights this year.

MPSSA 1A Boy’s Bracket

Maryland 2A Boys
Gwynn Park Yellow Jackets and Largo Lions tied for the Prince George’s 1A/2a/3A League Title and now they have received 1 and 2 seeds in the Maryland 2A South Region. Frederick Douglas is going to host a playoff game and then most likely face Gwynn Park. Central starts off at Calvert who is a very formidable opponent. The likely rubber match between the Jackets and Lions will be a classic.

MPSSA 2A Boy’s Bracket

Maryland 3A Boys
Potomac received a much deserved 2 seed in this region. They split with Gwynn Park and Largo two teams that have been ranked in the Washington Post top 20 so the Wolverines should be ready for the playoffs. Crossland will host a host a home game before possibly facing number 1 seed Thomas Stone Cougars. Friendly earned a 1st round bye but will have to travel to Chopticon (SMAC, St Mary’s) for it’s second round game. Ultimately, the 2A South should come down to a match up between the Wolverines and the Cougars

MPSSA 3A Boy’s Bracket

Maryland 4A Boys
This is an all Prince George’s County region and it stands to be the toughest boy’s basketball region. Flowers (Jaguars) is a very good number 1 seed and Eleanor Roosevelt (Raiders) is a solid number 2 seed but you cannot rule out lower seed Suitland. Duval (3) has proved that they belong this season and they would relish a 4A South Title. Wise is a team to be reckoned with too. In this region do not be surprised if the Raiders take the title.

Five Must See Boys High School Basketball Games in January

PG County Boys High School Basketball

Prince George’s County has been designated a Hoops Hotbed by ESPN. The 2011-2012 Boys High School Basketball season is heating up. We believe these are five must see January games involving Prince George’s County teams.

  • January 20th  7:15 p.m. – - Douglas (2A) travels to Largo (3A) in a must win game for the Eagles. Largo still has County and Maryland 3A State Title goals so they need to win to keep pace with Gwynn Park (2A) for a chance at the County Title.
  • January 21st    7:30 p.m. – - DeMatha at Gonzaga on Saturday January 21st at 7:30 p.m.- – features two of the areas best teams and is the only game on this list that does not involve two Prince George’s County teams.
  • January 24th   7:15 p.m. - – Duval is proving that they belong in the Prince George’s 4A League title race. A victory against the Suitland will help solidify their status as a contender.
  • January 27th  7:30 p.m. – - Riverdale Baptist has national aspirations and travels to National Christian in game that will be one tough road test.
  • January 31st   7:15 p.m.  — The last game featured game of the January involves Bowie and High Point two teams that are trying to position themselves to go deep in the Maryland State 4A playoffs. Bowie is the road team in this game but victory will help position them to be a first round playoff host.

Prince George’s County 2011-2012 Boys High School Basketball Update

The surprising, not so surprising team for the 2011-2012 4A Boy’s Basketball season is DuVal. Improvement was expected when they returned 4 starters, but this year’s team has already eclipsed last year’s win total. The Tigers have eclipsed last years win total in just 8 games. They have a 6-2 record, including a win over perennial Prince George’s County 4A League leader Eleanor Roosevelt. The Raiders are off to a 6-2 start as well. Flowers and Bowie are both 4-1 in league play, but the Bowie Bulldogs may be benefiting from a weaker schedule. Suitland is about where they were expected to be 5-2 overall. Expect the Rams to have no problem reaching the playoffs. Oxon Hill is a team that is hard to figure out — they have wins against Flowers and Suitland but lost to 2A Crossland. They could contend with Wise for Maryland 4A playoff spot or drop out of contention early. High Point’s league record 2-3 does not reflect that of a playoff contender but it is much too soon to rule them out. The Eagles losses against, Eleanor Roosevelt, Suitland and Bowie should not cause alarm. Their two games against DuVal later in the season will help define both teams.

In Prince George’s County 3A/2A/1A league favorite Gwynn Park is off to a 4-4 start. While a .500 record is not up to Yellow Jacket standards, they still should be regarded as the team to beat since 3 of their losses are out league and against bigger schools. Their only league loss came against Potomac, who is off to a 6-3 start with a win over 4A Blandensburg. Largo and Friendly lead the Prince George’s County 3A/2A/1A League with 5-0 records in league play. Surrattsville which was a preseason 1A playoff favorite finds itself in a deep hole with a 0-5 start in league play. Another playoff contender Douglas is 2-3 and will have to do well against Gwynn Park and Friendly if they want to make the Maryland 2A playoffs. Forestville and Fairmont Heights should contend for Maryland 1/A playoff bids.

Among the private schools, DeMatha is off to another strong start at 10-0. All of the Stag’s wins have been double digit wins. Bishop McNamara is just under .500 6-7 with hopes of a strong finish to the season. St Vincent Pallotti is doing very well at 11-5. Riverdale Baptist as expected is also having a fine season at 14-2. Laurel and Parkdale Meeting and Exciting 4A Matchup

Laurel coach, Tommy Harrison, is really seeing dividends from his emphasis on academics and practice habits. Freshman Megan Brown, Junior Candace Williams and Senior Asia Giles all contributed in Laurel High School’s 44-37 victory over Parkdale.
