The 2010 -2011 High School basketball season promises to be very exciting in Prince George’s County. DeMatha and Elizabeth Seton will be trying to defend their Washington Catholic Athletic Conference (WCAC) and City Titles. This year however, the strongest boys and girls basketball teams in the WCAC might just belong to Bishop McNamara. Riverdale Baptist is another private school that is a regional power in Basketball. Their Girl’s team has captured a national title.
Prince George’s County public schools are also dominate in basketball The Gwynn Park Boy’s basketball team will try to end a more than 20 year drought of State titles by fielding one of the strongest teams in the County. They have stumbled early but should finish strong down the stretch. If they do manage to finish strong it will because they were able to over come challenges from Douglas Largo and a surprising Surrattsville team. Friendly could be the dark horse in the Prince George’s 3A/2A/1A basketball race. The 4A race is once again being lead by Wise. Could this be the year that they finally dethrone Springbook the 3 time reigning State title champions. As tough as that challenge is holding off Parkdale, Suitland, C..H Flowers and Eleanor Roosevelt in the Maryland 4A South may prove to be even more daunting.
On the Girl’s side of the 3A/2A/1A basketball league it appears to be a three team race with Largo Surrattsville and Gwynn Park all looking to advance to the state title games. The 4A girls are much deeper with six teams off to impressive starts. Wise and Bowie are the frontrunners but Eleanor Roosevelt may be ready to take aim at a sixth Maryland State 4A Title in seven years. Oxon Hill C. H. Flowers and Suitland are perennial contenders and will be a tough outs once the playoffs start.
