6th Man Sports MLK Basketball Tournament of Champions6th Man Sports MLK Basketball Tournament of ChampionsThe 6th Man Sports is an Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to instilling academic excellence, values, discipline and leadership in young student athletes. With over 11 teams ranging from 9u/3rd grade to 17u/11th grade Boys and Girls, we are on the path to becoming one of the premier organizations on the east coast.

Byron Mouton, captain of the 2002 University of Maryland National Championship team founded 6th Man Sports, then developed the 6th Man Warriors AAU organization. Byron helped lead the Terrapins to the first National Championship in the history of the university. Just as he was dedicated to the Terrapins, he is dedicated to developing young athletes both on and off the court. “Many kids are not only seeking athletic development, they are looking for guidance and personal development as well,” says Byron.

This week we are honoring three of our National Champions from Prince George’s County. In 2008, The Black Barons Baseball Team went 27-4 for the Season and procceded to win Metropolitan Junior Baseball League World Series. Marlboro PeeWee Cheerleaders (ages 6-10) placed # 1 for the 2nd consecutive year at the Virginia Beach, VA US Finals Cheerleading Competition. The girls were ranked against cheerleaders that competed at 3 other events across the country and announced the overall US Champions for their age and division. More…

The Maryland United Lady Ballers won the 12U DII AAU National Championship in Ft Myers, Florida on July 8, 2009. They beat the Minnesota Stars 37-27 in the finals. The road was tough through the 41 team Pool Play in which the Lady Ballers earned a #2 seed in the Championship Bracket. More…

Alice P Williams Basketball Tournament

The Silver Hill Boys and Girls Club Presented the 4th Annual Alice P Williams Basketball Tournament on February 13-15, 2009. Alice Williams was a long time member of the Silver Hill Boys and Girls Club (SHBGC). She began her association with the Club in 1984 as the Cheerleading Coach. In 1995 she became the Deputy Director of the SHBGC. Mrs. Williams was known as “Grandma” to all the kids around the Club. She continued to be involved even after her kids had moved on. This tournament pays tribute to her memory and her dedication to SHBGC.

The DreamMakers 13U girls defeated the Team Sol 13U girls 56-51, in a battle of wills in this weekend’s Team Sol Junior Division Basketball Winter League. Both nationally-ranked teams competed for the bragging rights in a long standing rivalry. DreamMakers jumped out to an early lead in the first quarter, exploding with quick offense. Leading the offense was Taylor McCarley with 10pts (6 assists), Lynee Belton, 10 pts, and Maya Singleton with 9 pts. Team Sol, known for their explosive fast-break offense, could not contain the DreamMakers’, who adeptly increased the score with additional weapons of Raquel Lawyer, 6 pts (2 assts); Valerie Melson, 6 pts; Erica McIntosh, 4 pts; Aliya Roseborough, 4 pts; Marjani Lilliard, 3 pts; Jordan Maynard, 2 pts (1 asst); and Renee Kydd, 2 pts (1 asst). Belton, Singleton, Lawyer, Melson, Maynard, and Savonna Murphy aggressively secured possession, pulling down 18 rebounds, collectively.

Oxon Hill Lady Runners vs. Clinton Lady Jets U10 Girls B-ball

On Saturday, March 8th at Surrattsville High School, the 10 and Under Oxon Hill Lady Runners defeated the Clinton Lady Jets. The two newest basketball teams in the conference put up a defensive battle. The defensive effort was so good that Jaylen Hines of Oxon Hill didn’t score the first basket of the game until late in the first half. The Lady Runners added one more point before the half when Amore Harris sank a free-throw. Both the Lady Jets and the Lady Runners basketball teams exhibited a lot of energy in their defensive play.
