Prince George’s County is beginning to place an emphasis on High School Softball. It’s a sport that has lagged because too many athletes are being introduced to it at a late age; 13-14 years old instead of 9-10 years old. This enables Calvert, Charles, and St Mary’s Counties to have a competitive advantage in the Maryland State Playoffs. There is also a competitive imbalance in league play within the County. It is hoped that the Bowie Blue Jays organization will help infuse talent into the High Schools. They are fielding the only 12u travel team in the County. There is also emerging County talent on the Southern Maryland Shockers, an organization based in Charles County. They have a 10u program that is easily accessible for South County residents.
Once again expect Bowie and Gwynn Park to top the Prince George’s County 4A and 1A/2A/3A leagues in 2012. Frederick Douglas, Dr Henry Wise and Eleanor Roosevelt will be strong contenders. Amongst the Private schools look forward to 2012 positives from Riverdale Baptist, Elizabeth Seton and Bishop McNamara.
