On Saturday, February 11, 2012 @ 2:00 p.m. the Fairland Sports and Aquatics Complex (13950 Old Gunpowder Road Laurel, MD 20707) will be hosting the Prince George’s County Public High School Swimming Championships. Swimmers from 1A schools through 4A will be competing for county titles in Breast Stroke, Back Stroke, Butterfly Stroke and Free Style. In order to compete in the County Championship Meet, swimmers must exceed qualifying times at least twice in an event during the 2011-2012 swim season. Two of the teams to watch in this meet are Eleanor Roosevelt (4A) and Frederick Douglas (2A)
One of the Stars of the 2011 County Championship, Danielle Jackson (Fairmont Heights), went on to win the State 1A/2A/3A 100 Meter Breast Stroke Title. Danielle swam for the Theresa Banks Swim Club, Inc. outside of school. She was awarded a Swimming Scholarship from North Carolina A&T State University. Many of the swimmers in the 2012 Championship meet have been swimming competitively since they were 5-6 years old. One of the real exceptions is Gwynn Park High School Junior Andre Washington. He started swimming last year and has qualified in the 50 meter and 100 meter Free Style. In swimming, you want to beat the swimmers in the pool with you but the true challenge lies in reaching the wall faster than you have ever done before. Come cheer on these swimmers as they accept this challenge.
Support our Prince George’s County teams and see you at the pool!
