Prince George’s County has quietly become a national power in high school sports.  DeMatha High School was named the 2nd best High School sports program in the nation by Sports Illustrated in 2007.  They are also noted for academic achievements as well.  DeMatha is not the only sports program in the county that has done well on and off the field.  Eleanor Roosevelt High School is an academic magnet school that has won 60 state titles since the school was founded in 1976.  These schools have populated the NFL and NBA with All-Stars and All Pros.  The schools are not just successful in the major sports but other sports like Lacrosse and Cross Country as well.

These schools are the top programs in the County, but they are constantly challenged.  The top 10 public high schools have won over 260 State Titles since 1964.  Eleanor Roosevelt leads with 60 but they are closely followed by Central with 54 titles. Of the more than 100 titles won by these two schools, 65 of their titles have been won by their girl’s track and field teams.  Eleanor Roosevelt girls also dominate in Cross County too, having won the past four Class 4A Cross County State Titles.  More...
